Day 2 Sigiriya

Your journey takes you north to the cultural triangle. An area full of UNESCO world heritage sites, with ruins from old monastic citadels. First stop is for some fresh pineapple with possibly a dash of chilli from a local farmer, followed by some BBQ corn from a local roadside stall in a forest area frequented by some friendly primates.

A secret lake off the beaten path in Sigiriya is waiting to be discovered, full of flowering lotus plants, abundant in wildlife and with incredible views of Sigiriya rock.

In the cool of the morning, cycle or tuk tuk around the original capital of Buddhism is Sri Lanka, UNESCO Anuradhapura with a local guide who will give you insight into this ancient city. Walk under the sacred bodhi tree and witness Buddhist monks going about their daily routines.

This afternoon you head off into Kaudulla National Park, one of the islands best places for spotting wild elephants in their natural habitats.

Day 4 Sigiriya

After a hearty local breakfast it’s time to head off to Polonnaruwa for a morning exploring ancient ruins of days gone by. This well preserved sprawling ancient area is home to ruins dating back 1000 years. It is also home to some playful grey langurs and toque macaque apes with their bowl hair cuts.

Lunch today is an opportunity to relax in the shade of traditional hut on a rice paddy and enjoy fresh Sri Lankan cuisine.

A sunset climb up the ancient Sigiriya fortress, also know as lion rock is an opportunity not be missed. The remnants of the royal palace on top of the rock and the water gardens below are a UNESCO world heritage site.

Day 5 Kandy

Today you are heading south to the next corner of the cultural triangle, the picturesque city of Kandy. On the way visit Dambulla cave temple, also a UNESCO world heritage site. The early frescoes and paintings on the cave walls are believed to date back to the 8th century. The murals are extensive, covering approximately 2100m2.

Dambulla’s fruit and vegetable is the next stop, this is Sri Lanka’s largest fresh produce market and is a genuine insight into daily Sri Lankan life. 

Stop in at a small local medicinal garden where many varieties of spices are grown too learn about the traditional medicine in Sri Lanka.

This evening join our local host for a culinary experience as you learn abut Sri Lankan cuisine and try your hand at a local dish.

Day 6 Kandy

In the heart of the Kandy, the golden-roofed Temple of Tooth is one Sri Lanka’s most important buddhist sites. The temple houses the tooth relic of Buddha. The quieter early morning Puja is a special time at the temple when you can visit the temple and observe locals carrying out local customs.

After a heart breakfast and Sri Lankan tea it’s time to explore the Peradiniya botanic gardens gardens with a passionate local expert.

Day 7 Nuwara Eliya

Heading off into the colonial tea regions in the cooler mountain ranges further south you will pass waterfalls and spot ladies in their colourful clothing plucking tea leaves. We stop along the way to enjoy Romboda waterfall, and to visit a small tea factory.

You are joined by a host for an interactive walk around the tea plantation, including a visit to an operating tea factory. Let one of the local ladies show you the correct way to pluck the fresh tips and help them fill their basket of leaves.

The evening tonight will be spent in the old colonial town of Nuwara Eliya in the heart of the tea country. A picturesque town, next to a lake and surrounded by hills covered with tea.

Day 8 Ella

All aboard the scenic slow train to Ella for a 3.5hour journey through tea plantations, eucalyptus forests and past small villages. Travel on the local train on one of the worlds most scenic train trips

There is plenty off active relaxation to do in Ella, beginning this afternoon with a bushwalk to little Adams Peak, you will be rewarded at the summit by impressive views over to Ella rock and the valley below.

This evening is at leisure in the township of Ella.

Day 9 Ella

Ella is a small town with plenty of interesting waterfall walks and nice spaces to relax in. Take a tuk tuk off the beaten path through small villages to discover the less areas around Ella at the Diyaluma waterfall. Enjoy a fresh cinnamon tea prepared in a small roadside hut after a walk or swim in the falls.

If you are feeling like more of a challenge, then the  Ella rock hike is a great adventure and the views from the summit are majestic.

Day 10 Yala

Begin the morning by heading off road in a tuk tuk to the Demodora Nine Arch Bridge, the short walk takes you through bushland and along the railway tracks, timing it perfectly to be at the bridge when one of the few trains for the day travels over 100 year old bridge.

Wildlife adventure awaits with a 4×4 off road safari into Yala National Park searching for some of Sri Lanka’s diverse wildlife. Yala is home to jackals, leopards, sloth bears and elephants aswell as an abundance of colourful birds.

Day 11 Yala

Your second Yala 4×4 wildlife safari is planned for this morning. Your guide will take you through the national park in search of wildlife that are most active in the mornings as the sun is rising.

This afternoon is time to relax or to head into the sprawling town of Tissamaharma, home to many stunning white dadobas and plenty of local food huts serving fresh local produce.

Day 12 Galle

Leaving Yala behind it’s time to head north to the well preserved walled township of Galle Fort. Settled by the Portuguese in the 16th century this is the most well preserved walled town in Sri Lanka.

Galle is UNESCO world heritage listed, the paved streets are car free and there is an architectural and artistic vibe to the small town. Spend the afternoon and evening at leisure exploring the little laneways and the coastal wall.

Day 13 Galle

There are plenty of options for today in Galle. You might enjoy shopping in one of the many handicraft stalls or take a guided historic walk for a more in depth look into the story of Galle. Or head off on bikes and a boat to visit a rural village and enjoy traditional Sri Lankan hospitality.
